Best ultralight laptop hands down

I’ve been waiting and researching since Jan 2011 for a new lightweight portable notebook PC. I read about one hundred reviews online and tested various models in stores. Nothing had what I wanted at a price I was willing to spend. I was blown away when this laptop was released and quickly bought mine in May 2011 for $700. After 4 months of use I can ecstatically say that this is the best laptop that I’ve owned. The best factors being its blazing fast speed (newest Core i5 chip), large 640 GB hard drive, included DVD-R/RW drive (not found in other models in this size and weight class), superb 9 hour battery life, and ultralight sub-3 pound weight. The chiclet keyboard is very easy to type on, which I fell is equal but different to my previous Lenovo (IBM) model. I was pleasantly surprised by the great build quality, virtually no keyboard flex, and magnesium body case (not plastic like others).

My advice: Buy it. For the money you nothing on the market even comes close.

My only complaint:

1) The original advertised RAM capability was 16 GB. I was disappointed when I bought the pc to see that the actual limit is 8 GB. 8 GB is the normal maximum for this category of laptops. I would be thrilled if the limit was 16 GB, like originally advertised.

My recommendations:

1) Upgrade the memory to Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9. I immediately made this upgrade for only $45. The speed increase is well worth it.

2) Purchase this ultralight, well padded case Case Logic QNS-113 13.3-Inch EVA Molded Laptop Macbook Air/Pro Sleeve (Black). The case is inexpensive $16, superlight and very protective. I work out of this case and my laptop stays looking brand new.

3) If you don’t need the 640 GB hard drive and have the money, invest in a SSD hard drive. These hard drives have no moving parts and blazing fast speed. The only downside is that the price per GB is still high. But the speed upgrade is huge!

Other thoughts:

Some people are posting reviewing stating that they want this laptop to be something it can’t be for the price. Someone said it should be faster than his desktop – but we all know that desktops and laptops use different boards and chips due to size, heat and power restrictions. Someone said that the screen should be better. This computer is not designed for big screen gaming or Blu-ray. Someone complained about the bloatware. All new computers come with bloatware; even a fresh install of Windows 7 has bloatware. Simply remove what you don’t want with a free program like Revo Uninstaller. Some guy said that his Sony is better. If you want Sony’s “better than” model you’ll pay over $2000. Yes you’ll get the best of everything, but you’ll pay for it. The model’s by other companies don’t offer the same weight and specs as this model for the price at this time. I’ve looked.

If you are looking for a new PC, seriously consider this model. After going to laptops, I’ll never go back to desktops. After going ultralight, I’ll never get a heavy model again. 13.3 inch is the perfect size screen for nearly every application. Although DVD drives are not as heavily used as in the past, they are still a necessity and best if part of the computer.

  • Launchpad puts all your apps front and center for easy access.
  • View apps full screen and switch between them with a swipe.
  • Interact with your Mac using intuitive new Multi-Touch gestures.

Key Features

Flash Memory Storage

By replacing the standard spinning hard drive typically found in laptops (as well as desktop PCs) with flash memory, the MacBook Air delivers an almost instantaneous boot-up when you open the display, as well as faster application launches and snappier overall performance. Additionally, Apple has shed the enclosure that typically surrounds flash memory (usually about the same size as a standard hard drive), thus giving it a smaller footprint and helping to decrease the size of the MacBook Air.

The ultimate do-everything, take-everywhere notebook
Revolutionary Thunderbolt Technology

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O (input/output) technology delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions. Built into the MacBook Air, the Thunderbolt port allows you to connect to new Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals as well as existing USB and FireWire peripherals using simple adapters. You’ll be able to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, and you can daisy-chain up to six high-speed devices without using a hub. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

Glass Multi-Touch Trackpad and Backlit Keyboard

With the smooth, glass Multi-Touch trackpad, the MacBook Air makes it easy to navigate OS X Lion and your software applications. You can pinch, swipe or rotate images on the display screen with the brush of two fingers, or add more digits for a four-fingered vertical swipe to open Expose and quickly glance at all of your open windows.

Spacious, full-sized keyboard with backlighting.

In spite of its compact size, the MacBook Air has a full-size keyboard for comfortable, natural typing, and it’s backlit so you can keep typing in even the dimmest light.

Integrated FaceTime Webcam

You’ll be able to easily connect with friends, family, and business colleagues using the MacBook Air’s FaceTime camera, which is integrated into the thin bezel above the display. And with Apple’s FaceTime application, you’re not limited to video chats with other Macs–you can now make video calls to iPhone and iPod touch users (Wi-Fi connection required for mobile users).

Product Review  Mallo Bennie “Mallo”

Makes Owning a Laptop Fun Again Yay,

Switched over after 20 years of Windows. And I don’t plan on going back. I absolutely love this machine. Fast, responsive, light, clean, simple, chic. Now if I can just get that elephant Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 to function I’ll be in heaven. Strongly recommend that you splurge for the 256 SSD. The faster processor isn’t necessary, from what I can tell, but the 256 SSD is definitely needed in order to relax and spread out. The MAC OS seems to take big bites out of your storage space with its own backups and mysterious other machinations, so plump for the big drive. Also, after reading so many gripes about the heat and battery life, I have to report that this laptop is much much cooler than my 3-year-old Dell Latitude, and the battery lasts longer than any I’ve ever had. The shortest run Ive gotten from it has been 4 hours, and the longest about 8. Granted, I’ve always had 12-inch Dell notebooks, which are not necessarily stamina kings, but still. As for the heating, I guess I have noticed it when streaming videos or movies, so if that’s something you’ll be doing a lot, and for more than half an hour at a time, you might want to research the issue further. But for general browsing and applications, there’s no heat problem at all, even when using it on my lap.

One annoying and seemingly unnecessary thing versus Windows is the way the MAC OS wants to control all your files instead of letting you organize and maintain them yourself. iPhoto, for example, duplicates every photo on your hard drive, thereby doubling the space occupied, and won’t let you import photos into files of your own name and choosing. The MAC mail program makes 4 or 5 copies of every attachment, squirreling them away all over the place, and the word software (Pages or Word) replicates files so many times over I can’t keep track of them all. But I’m learning workarounds to all of this–e.g., use Gmail and Picassa (and/or Xee) instead of Mac Mail and iPhoto, change the settings in Word to make no backups at all, and then just manually backup after every few revisions, etc. And really, as long as the hard drive isn’t full, none of this really matters. It just bugs me from an efficiency standpoint. The important thing, when switching over from a PC, is to realize that almost everything that it seems, at first, like you can’t do on a Mac, you actually can. You just have to do a little digging on Google or MacRumors to figure out how. Give it a few weeks to get used to the OS and to get everything configured. This machine is worth the effort.

Product Description of this popular Laptop:

Very happy with this machine By Chrysopoeia

Bear with me here folks, I’m still trying to pull together my thoughts on my brand new laptop here, consider my review a “first draft”. :)

Received this laptop early this morning. My first impression is pretty good, but I’ve only been with it for a few hours thus far. I’ve surfed around online some, streamed some HD video, played a couple games, and removed a ton of bloatware.

Was a little worried at first, because the first boot-up took quite awhile, but once I removed some bloatware, shut down, and booted up again, it’s ready to go within 20-30 seconds. After running it for 2 hours straight, mostly surfing around online, it’s not hot enough to even call it warm, so it should be good about keeping cool. The fan seems to come on pretty often, but it’s not very loud, it’s mostly just the sound of air moving in and out. Wireless internet seems to work perfectly, and I easily connected to my network.

I actually quite like the touchpad on it, which is strange for me to say, because I’m picky about touchpads. I think it works well, and it’s slightly textured, but not overly so. The keyboard seems nicely built for a laptop too.

I don’t own much in the name of games, but I’ve played some Sim City 4 and The Sims 2 on high settings without any hiccups. HD video streamed smoothly as well.

Only issues I’ve had thus far?

-AOL Instant Messenger. For whatever reason, it won’t work with the audio on this laptop. If the program tries to make a sound, it will freeze up. Disabling sounds on the program fixed it.

-Battery meter doesn’t seem right. I looked at the battery meter often, last I saw… it read 1 hour and 13 minutes left. Not more than 10 minutes later, it died. There was no warning, and I almost had a stroke thinking that the laptop itself died.

-Webcam circa 1999? Seriously, it’s pretty bad. I don’t care though.

Overall, I’m quite happy with my purchase. I’ll be updating this review once I spend more time with it and finish getting my thoughts together.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271: Great for personal use …, By

Gaben

I think this is a great laptop for me. It’s my third one; I had an earlier series but let a non-authorized tech “clean it up”, resulting in the purchase of a 2nd one, the Model I’m reviewing here.

The hard drive died within 2 weeks of purchase. I liked how it performed while it did, so I ordered my current L755-S5271 (Fortunately both Toshiba and Amazon [POP] have great warranty service).

I happen to like the larger monitor (approx 16″ diag)for artwork and multi-tasking. I like the 10key section on right side of keyboard simply because my fingers fly on it(accounting)as opposed to trying to use numbers on the alpha side. I like the slim design and light weight. The keyboard requires only a slight touch on each key, which has increased my wpm. The on-board mouse area can be turned on/off which is another good feature for me as I often plug in an art tablet and pen. When I use the laptop mouse, it’s surprisingly sensitive – allowing me minimal ‘finger use’ and virtually no clicking.

I’m happy with the processor (i3) because it works well, has the bugs corrected unlike the newer i5. I’m running Windows Home Premium 64bit (pre-installed). I like the USB w/’Sleep and Charge’ feature as it’s made a 7-outlet surge protector unnecessary (I can charge anything that plugs into it even while logged off) because I don’t charge all 7 things at the same time anyway. The battery life is approx 5.5hrs when no gaming is done, about 4 hrs if I play games. The 802.11N Wireless works everywhere I go, with a strong signal all the time. I rent less movies (DVDs)because the picture/definition on this monitor is very crisp and clear (both Toshiba and Amazon offer direct movie viewing, too). The sound/speakers are great on their own, even better if I plug in additional speaker system (this laptop feeds that with no problem whatsoever).

Bottomline, this is a great laptop for me personally.

I took time setting it up for my use, referring to User Guide more than I did with previous computers. If I found a different brand/model laptop of similar size and design – I’d probably be happy with it too – utilizing the User Guide saves mega-phone calls to frustrating Tech Support because I’m aware of how much I can do on my own now. The fact that Toshiba’s Guide is User-friendly helps a great deal.

I chose to use the laptop daily for one month before reviewing.

Product Review of this popular Laptop:

If you’re wondering this is the laptop you should buy., By

IrishNinja

So I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about computers. I built the PC that I have and know a good bit about software and applications. I say this only so if you’re reading this you know I’m not ignorant and don’t pick at things that don’t even really matter (as some tend to do). Before I decided to buy this particular laptop I did some pretty extensive research. The PC that I have is capable of hardcore gaming so I didn’t need anything excessive. I did want a respectable machine however, and when I came across this one for the price it had everything I was looking for and MORE.

The main pros are that this is a very well built and sleek looking machine. Just by handling it out of the box you know it was built with quality parts. The black design almost looks like a charcoal and it is a high gloss finish with raised lines that prevent fingerprints (love that). The time it took to start up was a little longer but once I removed a ton of bloatware from it it boots up quickly. The backlit keyboard is awesome to have because I do a lot of computing in front of the TV at night. Nice to not worry about having a light on. The keyboard also have a numeric keypad which I will use quite often, and it does this without cramping the regular keyboard. The mouse pad is sensitive to your palms rubbing against it while typing but Toshiba remedies this by having a mousepad lock button just above it. The speakers are of decent quality for this laptop. It cracks me up how people are so disappointed with laptop speakers. You’re buying a LAPTOP, it’s not supposed to be a home theater. Although the screen on this is AWESOME. I download a lot of video in high def and they look amazing on this. Finally, having the extra USB 3.0 port is great. I have terabytes worth of video and music and I can transfer it between machines quickly and efficiently. I didn’t mention any of the specs because I’m sure you read them and if you know anything about computers this is a pretty high powered laptop for the price.

The only con I have so far is the battery life. Although it does have an eco-utility the battery still only last a little over 3 1/2 hours if your busy on it (I multitask a lot). Toshiba does have different batteries you can buy, however if you’re willing to spend a little extra.

In conclusion, I am VERY happy with my decision to buy this laptop. Oh and BTW it came with a free Xbox 360. How can you beat that?! It is well worth the money and I plan on having this machine for quite a few years.

Key Features

Revolutionary Thunderbolt Technology

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O (input/output) technology delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions. Built into the MacBook Pro, the Thunderbolt port allows you to connect to new Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals as well as existing USB and FireWire peripherals using simple adapters. You’ll be able to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, and you can daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub.

And because Thunderbolt is based on DisplayPort technology, you’ll be able to connect to a high-resolution display from the same port. Any Mini DisplayPort display plugs right into the Thunderbolt port, and you can also connect displays that use DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, or VGA connections with an existing adapter. You’ll also be able to include your display into a daisy-chained set of peripherals.

Next-Generation Quad-Core Intel Processor

This MacBook Pro is powered by a second-generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor (dubbed “Sandy Bridge”), which provides breakthrough digital media management, content creation, and 3D gaming capabilities. With updated Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, the latest Core i7 increases speed automatically for whatever you’re doing, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload.

Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology enables each core of your processor to work on two tasks at the same time, delivering the performance you need for smart multitasking. And you’ll enjoy a rich set of new features for a stunning and seamless visual experience with no additional hardware. The “Sandy Bridge” Core i7 processor also provides faster access to the installed RAM, with an integrated memory controller to connect fast 1333 MHz memory directly to the processor.

With new microarchitecture, the graphics processor resides on the same chip as the central processor and has direct access to the 6 MB of shared L3 cache–helping your applications run at peak performance. And an integrated video encoder enables HD video calls with FaceTime, while an efficient decoder gives you long battery life when you’re watching DVDs or iTunes movies.

Automatic Graphics Switching

The MacBook Pro offers excellent graphics flexibility with two video processors–the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6750M processor (with 1 GB of GDDR5 video memory) for heavier workloads and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor for better battery life on the go. When gaming or using processor-intensive applications like Aperture or Final Cut Pro, you’ll appreciate the power of the AMD Radeon HD 6750M, which lets you see more frames per second and experience better responsiveness. And the automatic graphics switching feature determines which graphics processor an application needs and switches instantly between the processors.

Buttonless Multi-Touch Trackpad

With no button on the glass trackpad, there’s more room to track and click–left, right, center, and everywhere in between. Without a separate button, the trackpad gives your hands plenty of room to move on the large, silky glass surface. It also incorporates Multi-Touch gestures–including swipe, pinch, rotate, and four-finger swipe. And it also now supports inertial scrolling, an intuitive way to scroll through large photo libraries, lengthy documents and long web sites.

Review of this popular Apple Laptop:

MBP… where have you been all my life? By M. Canales

I can sum up my review in one word:
Superb. No, Extraordinary! No, Awesome! No… well, you get the idea.

Maybe i’m over reacting, but i do love this little machine. Its just over the top, the quad core processor breezes through anything i throw at it, and the 4Gb are very capable (though i’m considering upgrading it to 8gb soon). Something that really rules is the video card. So far i’ve installed several games on it, and ALL of them it runs on very high settings.

This is my first Mac, so i had to suffer a slight adaptation period. A very slight period. It took me all 15 minutes to get used to it. It’s just so natural!

I love tweeking configs and personalizing my computers, and though Mac OS is more rigid with respect to the themes one can put up, its a marvel when it comes to comfort. If you get down and dirty, Exposé and Spaces will rock your world. And the dock is just so much more practical than the standard issue windows bar.

Now, compatibility wise Mac OS can seem problematic, however this is just an illusion. This particular MBP packs so much punch that you can literally run windows on it simultaneously without even a hiccup. Virtualization, however, is a must for anyone that needs specialized software (specifically anyone with a CAD oriented program repertoire).

Im running Parallels 6, with a Windows XP virtual machine, and it runs all my Engineering programs beautifully (Staad.pro, MathCAD, Civil 3D, Revit Structure, MS Project). There is a Mac version for AutoCAD, but if you already have the windows license, the virtual machine will run it beautifully too. With tools such as “Coherence” you can be using Windows and Mac simultaneously without having to deal with the typical Windows problems.

Something i’m loving is the stability. Now, i have been pumping this baby with hard hitting processes since day 1, and it has responded well. Now, don’t get me wrong, it did have its standard hangs on certain apps, however the hangs are very “contained”, as the OS on a whole remained perfectly stable during these hangs. The apps that would hang, could easily be Force Quit and reopened with no data loss.

I’ve been using video converters for a long time, since i do have preffered formats for video, and this little piece of heaven really cuts down conversion time. There is this little open source app called Handbrake that handles itself pretty well for conversion. Its one of the only apps that i’ve found that can handle the quad core resources almost seemlessly.

Bootcamp is a must if you do heavy gaming. I installed Windows 7 on it and it runs like its native… Better even. I’ve installed games such as Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Deadspace 2, Starcraft 2, and Just Cause 2. They all run on full graphics without a zinch. I’ve been really pushing this machine, and so far im extremely satisfied.

I’ve been reading other reviews, and i cant understand some of the complaints. Maybe they got bad units, but then again Apple will replace any defective unit in a flash so it’s not really an issue. I dont have any complaints with respect to battery life, i can get the advertised 7 hours, and even push out 8hours if i bump out Airport whilst im using text processors. However when using resource hogs, the battery drains quickly (for instance when running XP simultaneously the battery life goes down to around 3-4 hours. Graphicly demanding programs also drain the battery quickly.

If you are looking into this particular model (15″ 2.2Ghz Quad Core 4gb Ram 6750 AMD Radeon), then chances are you know your way around computers. My guess is you are probably into graphicly demanding progs as well. So i can vouch for it, and say that it has answered elegantly to any vulgar attempt i’ve made at maxing it out. If you are not looking for a powerhouse though, i STRONGLY recommend getting one of the mid ranged models.

The price tag on this baby was the only cringe-factor… but now, 3 weeks into this enterprise, i can say its definitely worth it. If you can afford it, and you will actually use it at its potential i absolutely recommend it. If you are a casual user, however i recommend something less expensive.

Windows users don’t be afraid. There are more ways to run windows on a mac than you can shake a stick at… but DO NOT buy this computer just to run windows on it… just get a PC, its cheaper :P

So in short, this laptop is over the top, i strongly recommend it for anyone looking for a powerhouse, but i strongly advise against this particular model for anyone looking for just casual computing. Anyway you go about it, Apple won’t let you down. I finally understand why people say “Once you go Mac, you never go back”.

Review of this popular Apple Laptop:

I Don’t Regret This Purchase Bydavey118

I had been looking for a new computer since my old HP laptop went on the fritz, suddenly not playing sound or video. This past weekend it stopped working completely so I figured I could allow myself to buy a new laptop. I had been researching macs for a couple of months and had originally settled on the Macbook Pro 13 inch. But with the introduction of the new Macbook Airs I had a decision to make. There were nothing but glowing reviews for the Macbook Air, and everyone said that buying a Macbook Air was no longer a compromise of performance for portability. I still decided to get the Macbook Pro 13 mainly because of the upgradability which the Air could not offer. I also liked the style of the Pro over the Air, and the Pro just seemed like more of a value for the price. The only thing that really appealed to me about the Air was the SSD and how quickly applications load, but I figured I could upgrade the hard drive in the future.

DESIGN

Anyway I love this machine. It is beautiful. I now understand why people are so drawn to Apple products. It is a very sleek machine and the model of simplicity. I love the feel and look of the aluminum. I love the display and the black frame surrounding it which really just makes everything pop out at you. It is very easy to read everything on the screen. The keys are soft to the touch, quiet, and the keyboard only consists of keys that you will use, this as opposed to my old HP which had several keys that seemed to have no function.

HARDWARE

This computer is very fast at least to me. My old machine was three years old so when upgrading to this one with the newer Intel i5 processor, the speed is very noticeable. All of the applications seem to load very quickly. The hard drive is not the largest or the fastest, although 320GB is more than enough for me. I will likely upgrade this if they ever made an SSD that is large enough for a reasonable price. It has 4 GB of ram which right now is plenty for me but it can be increased to 8GB if I ever feel the need. Supposedly the integrated graphics on this thing are not that great. So far I haven’t noticed any problems watching video or playing the video games I like. I have played Left 4 Dead 2 on fairly high settings and there was no lag, but that is not by any means the most taxing game. I think the graphics on this computer are fine for most things that the average person would use except for gaming. I am sure professionals would probably be better suited buying the 15 or 17 inch pro as it has a discrete graphics card along with the Intel HD 3000 that comes with this model. Other notable attributes are the HD FaceTime camera and Thunderbolt port. There are very few peripherals which utilize the Thunderbolt port, the only one right now is some sort of stacked external hard drive which is very expensive, so the port probably won’t get much use right now, although it does double as the display port. It would be cool if in the future they would have a external graphics card to supplement the onboard graphics.

FUNCTION

So far this computer has done everything I have wanted it to. Obviously it works well performing day to day tasks such as email, web surfing, and watching youtube videos or netflix/hulu. Although I have not used it to do things like word processing and spreadsheets it would have no problem doing so. I have hooked my HD TV to the display port via a display port to HDMI adaptor and played HD video through my Mac. This will come in use when my team’s college football games are relegated to ESPN3 and it is great that it also supports audio. Getting used to OS X is pretty easy although some things do seem to be more convoluted than they were on a PC such as changing the wallpaper to an image you’ve downloaded. Things like this are just different and will take time to get used to. I love surfing the web with this machine. Using the multi-touch track pad is great for the internet, everything is more intuitive and fun. I love how quickly this thing boots up and especially how quickly it shuts down. It also seems to be whisper quiet, I very rarely even notice the fan running, even when I am watching a video. Only when I am playing a game does the fan start buzzing, but even then it is not that loud. It is much quieter than my previous laptop.

NEGATIVES

Really I wish for the price there was a discrete graphics card, you would think for $1200 they could sneak one of those in there. After all this is a machine that if this hardware were in a PC you would be paying $800. As a long time PC user, the price was hard to stomach. I know with Apple products you are paying for more than the hardware, but still for $1200 it should have been feasible.

I would recommend this machine to anyone who is looking to switch to Mac. I felt of all of the current Macbook models this was the best value. I like that fact that it is upgradable and I love the look of it. I can see myself using this thing for a very long time. I am looking forward to learning more about what this machine is capable of because I don’t think I have even scratched the surface.

Review of this popular Apple Laptop:

Big Performance Leap By Djsteve

I upgraded to this model (early 2011 Quad Core i7 17″ MacBook Pro) from the first in Apple’s series of “unibody” laptops (late 2008 Core 2 duo 15″ MacBook Pro). Both have been excellent laptops and have remarkably similar features given the years between them. However, what makes the difference here is pure raw speed.

The i7 processor has four cores each running at 2.2Ghz and the ability to “hyperthread” to operate in a virtual eight core mode. Applications must be written in a specific way to take full advantage of the multiple cores, however the processor has another trick up its sleeve in such cases. If some of the cores are underutilized then the processing speed of the those in use are bumped up. This translates into blazing speed across the board.

Other improvements include automatic switching between the two included (and upgraded) video processors, one for high performance and the other for economic power consumption. A new “Thunderbolt” port is provided, which permits extremely high-speed data transmission to and from external devices (as soon as they become available with this new standard!). This is in addition to the more familiar set of ports, including gigabit ethernet, Firewire 800, USB2.0, digital audio in/out, analog audio in/out, magsafe power, etc.

While this laptop may not physically appear to be a new model, I feel this is an advantage unto itself. This being my second unibody mac, I can attest that Apple has a brilliant case design that needs no modification. One needs only to pick it up to immediately feel the solid build quality and ruggedness despite its thin and relatively lightweight specs. The body is carved from a solid block of aluminum, and save for the back plate there are no visible seams or screws. There is a world of difference between this and most other plastic laptops.

Unfortunately Apple has decided to saddlebag this wicked-fast tank with a relatively pokey 5400rpm hard drive, which ends up being a noticeable bottleneck in performance at startup and other disk-intensive times. I appreciate the capacity of the included 750GB drive, but swapping it out with my existing 500GB solid state hybrid drive provided an additional performance boost well worth the reduced storage space. Incidentally, changing just about any of the internal components appears to be relatively straight forward, as the back plate removes to expose all.

To conclude, this is one speedy machine who’s only noticeable flaw is the included large but unimpressive hard drive. Swap it out for a faster drive (especially a SSD) and this is a laptop that cannot be topped.

Review of this popular Apple Laptop:

Replaced my 13 2010 MBP By A Techy Guy

Let me start off by saying I have always been a pc guy until I purchased my 2010 macbook pro 13′ last year and I must say I don’t know why I waited so long! I purchased my 13 back in September and about 6 months later I saw the new MacBook pros came out and comparing the specs I felt like I needed to upgrade. I replaced my 2010 Macbook Pro 13 with this and I must say that I am very pleased. The dual core on the 2010 seemed fast but when compared to the i7 quad core the dual core isn’t even in the same universe! The 15′ is super fast and great at handling multiple apps at once. The new Lion OSX is excellent and apple has added a lot of things to make this os superb to others. The only drawback is that Apple has axed rosetta which means power pc run applications and games are no longer supported. However I like the fact that if needed you can add windows via bootcamp (if you want to play pc games or need to use apps that are not compatible with macs). The battery life on this laptop is great. I can usually get 6 to 8 hours of life from a single charge depending on what I am doing. Most laptops can only get 3 or 4 max. The battery can actually be calibrated to help get the most out of a charge. Ilife 11 is a great addition with this laptop and apps like iMovie and iPhoto couldn’t be easier to use. Portability isn’t as good as the 13′ but with this computer being pretty much 2x-3x faster that the 2010 13′ I’m not complaining. Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase and if your thinking about converting to a Mac, DO IT! You will be very satisfied.

OS X Lion

Every Mac comes with OS X Lion, the latest release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. With over 250 features including Multi-Touch gestures, Mission Control, full-screen apps, and Launchpad, OS X Lion takes the Mac further than ever.

Key OS X Lion Features
  • Mission Control provides a bird’s-eye view of everything running on your Mac.

Spacious, full-sized keyboard with backlighting .

Review of this popular Apple Laptop:

Almost perfect machine! By J. Buckner

I have purchased many Macs and PCs so I am not hardcore fan of only one type. However, I have been looking for an ultra portable computer that can truly function as a day to day laptop and not just as a netbook. The old MB airs were really just netbooks with apple being a bit stingy on the SSD space. However, they completely did away with the guts of the old one and created a serious portable computer! I was on the fences between the 13 and 11 as well but after using both for a while in the apple store, I asked myself why I wanted an air to begin with? Why was I ok with no more disc drive? Why was size and weight so important? The answer did not sit well for me with the 13. The reason being is its the same size as the MB pro 13 and yes its lighter and thinner, but not enough to justify getting it. If I am going 13 inch, I am getting the pro. The 11 inch is truly in class by itself. This thing is simply amazing. Its hard to believe they can fit that much technology into this little thing and have it perform the way it does. I am not going to get into the lack of optical drive as there are in depth reviews on that if that is something your concerned with. I am pretty sure that everyone looking to purchase this has come to terms with the fact that its really not needed anymore, for the most part.

Pros:
Screen is beautiful, design is classy and feels sturdy, backlit keyboard is back, trackpad is elite, speed and power is mind blowing and the way ios Lion is designed is very cool once you get the feel for it. There is a reviewer that says you cant get the same specs as the 13 inch. That is the furthest thing from the truth. Amazon only sells two versions of each size so perhaps thats what they meant. If you go to apples website, you can get (as I did) the 11 inch with the core i7, 4GB ram and 256 SSD. Only difference at that point is the 11 inch has no SD slot and the native resolution is slightly less than the 13 but its more crisp on the 11.

Cons:
So why the 4 stars instead of 5? Simply because of one issue which is a big issue for me, and thats battery life. Although Apple says you can get 5 hours from this thing, its more like 2 and half or 3 with moderate to heavy use. Perhaps you can get 5 hours with no video or downloading content and simply checking out websites that do not require flash. Granted the 13 inch has a bigger battery and Apple claims 7 on it, I would suspect its more like 4 or 5 but I never tested it to that extent to be fair. The other thing which is not that big of a deal but bothers me a little is the speakers. I think Apple took the cheap route with that and could have made them sound a tad louder. Its not a big issue because most people will have external speakers set up or use headphones but if I had to be real picky, that would be the only thing.

To give you an idea on what I am comparing this to, I purchased (and quickly returned) a Samsung series 9. Although that thing looks pretty, its cheap overpriced junk with a ton of bloatware, misleading specs, (claims to be 128 SSD but its really 70 after all the junk it comes with) horrible and unresponsive trackpad and the wifi makes guest appearances… I know there are other computers that can rival apple when it comes to the MB pro line and their desktops. However, there is nothing in my opinion that can even come close the new MB Airs. For the price and specs, this thing is truly a spectacular machine.
